Roxanne Jackson: Nature is a Whore: A Comedy & A Tragedy at The Hole

Casting a range of characters, the artist’s sculptures tell a dizzying story that blurs the boundaries between the real world and our imaginations. Visit The Hole to be entranced by Jackson’s fantasy and admire her command of the craft.

Through October 23rd

312 Bowery

Matthew Ritchie: A Garden in the Machine at James Cohan

Matthew Ritchie melds emerging technologies with classic artistic mediums in his innovative practice. Utilizing a type of machine learning called generative adversarial networks, Ritchie builds a unique visual language drawing upon earlier works, medieval art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection. On view at James Cohan are paintings, drawings, sculpture, and film that map Ritchie’s fantastical world.

Through October 15th

48 Walker Street

Spencer Finch: We sent the wave to find the wave at James Cohan

Spencer Finch’s fourth solo exhibition with James Cohan continues his commitment to exploring our ways of seeing. On his practice the artist shared:

“Sometimes I am just trying to see clearly, even though I know that is impossible. Other times, I am trying to not see clearly, hoping it gives insight into that very impossibility. This second type of seeing, which requires a separation of perception from cognition, embraces the weird and wonderful empirical richness of the world.”

After 48 Walker Street, head to 52 Walker to expand your perception with Finch’s paintings, works on paper, and installations.

Through October 8th

52 Walker Street

Will Ryman: New York, New York at Chart Gallery

Visit Chart Gallery to step inside Will Ryman’s New York City, a three dimensional landscape spanning the gallery’s two floors. Our familiar subway seats, park benches, and sidewalks set the stage for Ryman’s collection of sculptures, including works in clay and bronze. This exhibition is a celebration of the artist’s beloved hometown that simply can’t be missed!

Through October 22nd

74 Franklin St

Jackie Saccoccio: Tempestuous at Van Doren Waxter

Jackie Saccoccio’s large-scale, radiant abstract compositions mesmerize at Van Doren Waxter. Tempestuous is the artist’s first exhibition since her passing, sharing paintings and works on paper produced in her last two years of life. Described as “atmospheric”, “explosive”, and “ravishing” by Roberta Smith, Saccoccio mastered a beautiful balance of structure and improvisation that must be admired this fall.

Through October 29th

23 East 73rd Street

Basil Kincaid: River, Frog and Crescent Moon at Venus Over Manhattan

Incorporating recycled materials often sourced from loved ones, Basil Kincaid’s textiles pay equal attention to material and form in his engagement with identity and self-expression. The warm quality of his chosen medium matches the artist’s interest in connection to one’s ancestors. Symbols of labor, nurture, love, nature, and interconnectedness are found in the displayed quilts and sculptures.

Through October 9th

120 East 65th Street

Head On curated by Dieter Schwarz at LGDR

If you walk through any encyclopedic museum, you’ll find representations of the face through time differing in medium, style, size, etc. Dieter Schwarz highlights sculptural depictions of the human face as a building block of visual culture in Head On

Through October 15th

909 Madison Avenue

Sheree Hovsepian: Leaning In at Rachel Uffner

Sheree Hovsepian introduces the energy of her “nest-like” studio to the public in Leaning In. Showcasing photography, works on paper, and sculpture, the artist’s first solo exhibition with Rachel Uffner is an ode to experimentation, especially in regard to material interplay and assemblage.

Through November 5th

170 Suffolk Street

Jameson Green: With Regards, Without Regrets at Derek Eller Gallery

Jameson Green’s new collection of paintings explores the process of evolving from boyhood to manhood. Offering a visual language for an experience that many can relate to, Green complements this centuries old tale with references to art historical legends. Ultimately the playful, cartoon-like realm offers meaningful questions on adolescence.

Through October 8th

300 Broome St

Yuri Yuan: Dark Dreams at Alexander Berggruen

Inspired by her own dreams, Yuri Yuan exhibits a series of scenes that capture the emotional highs and lows of our imaginations. By focusing on the moment immediately after waking up, Yuan blurs the boundaries between dreamworlds and reality. The uncanny, sometimes eerie, paintings offer an intimate view into the artist’s subconscious.

Through October 12th

1018 Madison Ave Floor 3

Klara Kristalova: Flora and Fauna at Perrotin

Klara Kristalova introduces ten characters, cast in stoneware and glazed to perfection, in Flora and Fauna. Inspired by the Nordic forest surrounding her Norrtälje based studio, Kristalova fuses modern personalities with natural forms. After visiting the exhibition, you’ll find yourself adoring the amusing figures and envisioning the plot that ties them together.

Through October 22nd

130 Orchard Street

Chiffon Thomas: Staircase to the Rose Window at PPOW

The title of Chiffon Thomas’s first solo exhibition with PPOW references a gothic window in sight line from his childhood home on the South Side of Chicago. The window came to represent another another world of possibility for Thomas, one that he could never reach as a child. The artist’s recent collection of sculpture examines the notion of transformation and the attainment of what the window may represent.
