What: Gorgeous large-scale paintings that transport viewers to a world of euphoric fantasy.

Miranda Forrester
Who: Miranda Forrester (b. 1997)
Where: London.
What: Fine, figurative work that deals with the queer Black body as well as the presence and absence of light and space due to Forrester’s use of PVC as a canvas.

Amani Lewis
Who: Amani Lewis (b. 1994)
Where: Lewis based in Baltimore and Miami
What: They create their rich works by digitally manipulating photographs, on which they then layer paint, pastel, glitter and embroidery. These works often explore Black life in Baltimore.

David Smalling
Who: David Smalling
Where: Born in Jamaica; based in New York City.
What: Beautiful, humorous and intellectual compositions—some series are highly figurative; others are very abstract—that riff off of art history, popular culture, Caribbean folklore and his own experiences.

Anya Paintsil
Who: Anya Paintsil (b. 1993)
Where: The Welsh-Ghanaian artist is based in Chester, UK
What: Fiery textile works made with weaves, braids, and even the artist’s own hair as the artist partakes in conversations surrounding race and gender.

What: Painterly, feminine portraits of female protagonists caught in dramatic and intimate moments.

Rachel Jones
Who: Rachel Jones (b. 1991)
Where: Born in London, based in Essex.
What: Highly visceral abstractions that use “motifs and colour as a way to communicate ideas about the interiority of Black bodies and their lived experience” to quote the artist herself (you might recognize her work—Jones was the artist behind Harper Bazaar’s 2021 art cover… or perhaps her work that has been acquired by the Tate, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston or the ICA in Miami).
